Midlothian, VA – Featured Kitchen

When this Midlothian, VA couple came to us to help plan their kitchen renovation, at the top of their wish list was a space built for entertaining. They also wanted a space that was warm and inviting for friends and family.

To satisfy these goals, we added a new 8 foot addition off the back of the house, effectively doubling their useable space. An easy elegance was achieved through mixing cabinet finishes and keeping an open floor plan. Yorktowne Antique White cabinetry with a mocha glaze on the perimeter adds old-world charm while the Java cherry island provides visual contrast and modern flair.

The large island provides ample seating and lots of handy storage solutions, such as a pots and pans drawer. The curves of the island are mirrored in the ceiling detail above, helping to break up the space and add interest to the “fifth” wall. To contrast the square lines, the arc element was repeated throughout the space in details such as the tile over the range and the large garden window above the main sink. A custom designed range hood, tray base bump-outs and decorative feet add architectural detail, breaking up the large back wall while glass cabinets above give the clients a place to showcase their favorite collections.

For one of our favorite modifications to the space, we’ve taken a typical inefficient closet and turned in to a morning center, perfect for grab and grab and go convenience. We’ve run electrical to the bottom drawers so cell phones and laptops have an easily accessible hiding place. The center cabinet acts as a coffee bar while vitamins, cereal, purse and briefcase are neatly stowed away in the cabinet above.

While the look of the room is important, function is foremost. Double dishwashers mean the hosts of the party can enjoy more time with their guests and less time with the dishes. A full sized sink in the island, as opposed to a bar sink, means added versatility. The island sink acts as the main area for food prep while the double sink is perfect as a cleaning zone. A dry bar with beverage center, wastebasket and pull-out liquor storage keeps party guests out of the main work zones while helping the chef stay part of the action. The result is a kitchen where loved ones can gather to enjoy good food, good friends and great memories.
